NAWOJ FCT Urges Women Journalists to Embrace Technology in their Reportage
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ FCT Chapter, has urged women Journalists to embrace technology for effective Reportage. This was made known recently in Abuja at a Congress meeting chaired by the Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita Ikpang, and State Executives and Union members including the NAWOJ Vice President, Zone D, Chizoba Ogbeche.
The congress featured a training session on the topic “Using Technology for Women Empowerment Amidst Economic Challenges.”Speakers were Vice Chairman FCT, Correspondents Chapel,Comrade Grace Ike and Executive Director, Hope Raisers Global Foundation, Angonimi David Imeh, who stressed that it’s essential for female journalists to explore new avenues and harness the potential of technology to enhance their work.
Rather than focusing on challenges or limitations, embracing digital tools and skills like social media engagement, data journalism, and multimedia storytelling can open doors to innovation and professional growth. Also, the Executive Director, Hope Raisers announced free training for 10 female journalists on Digital Technology.
The Association, rising from its meeting, focused on various issues affecting the Association and the nation at large.
On State of the Nation;
The Congress appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider the appointment of a minister for the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, which had been rudderless for over 6 months.
The Congress raised the alarm on the current review of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP Act), worrying that for an act that took 16 years to get implemented, it was important that the act be reviewed and not totally amended so as not to discard relevant sections in the rush for reforms.
The Congress was of the opinion that security agencies should be up and doing as crime rate has drastically increased in FCT
On the rising cases of victims of yahoo boys and online dating, the congress advised parents to teach their children morals to avert occurrences of fraud and rituals as well as the rush to get rich.
On State of the Union:
The Congress charged members to be proactive and rise to the occasion in providing support for victims of the recent Borno flood. They further agreed that with the National Chairperson of the Association, coming from Borno State, it will count greatly if members were to help with some voluntary donations to support victims in the state
Congress called on the Chairperson to write to the necessary authorities to create an avenue for members to be able to access the federal government rice palliative. However available information revealed that journalists could buy from the various sales points if they have their National Identification Numbers (NIN). Sales centers include the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) Head of Service (HOS) the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to purchase.
NAWOJ FCT was charged to be more humane and extend hands of help and fellowship to members in view of current economic situation.
The Chairperson comrade Bassey ita Ikpang however appealed to members to come up with useful contacts that could help as the Exco was ready to write and appeal for assistance .
Members were tasked to take their security seriously, while parents were advised to admonish their children, to run away from fraudulent and other quick rich activities
The Association was urged to create more awareness on the ongoing fraud ritualists, where women are mostly victims .
While the Congress stressed the need for parent to advise their daughters on the need to stay aware from certain behaviours that could expose them to danger. The Vice president Zone D Chizoba Ogbeche and Chairperson Bassey Ita Ikpang stressed the need for both boys and girls to be educated on good morals if we must eliminate some vices in the society.
The Congress is supported by Africa Health Budget Network, a Non-governmental organization also stressed the need to ensure Persons with Disabilities are carried along in all its activities
