Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, flavonoids, and other plant compounds that can reduce information. A study found that consuming sunflower seeds and other seeds five times or more each week resulted in lower levels of inflammation, which also lowered risk factors for several chronic diseases.
In line with the benefits of sunflower, the GreenLand News online media team reached out to Jibrin Bukar, National President of Sunflower Growers Processors of Nigeria.
Our interactions with him shows that the association have been partnering with various key stakeholders to promote and enlighten the public on the significance of sunflower.

According to him, “the Association was nurtured by the Federation of Agricultural Commodities Association of Nigeria (FACAN) and was launched by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment on September, 30th 2019; before then the association have been in existence since 2016-2017

National Council on Agriculture approved Sunflower as a value chain. The ministry, also requested the list of registered members.

In his words:
“In terms of production, we have about 250 metric tons production on the average, annually. Export wise, it rose from $14,000 from 2017, to $171,000 in 2021. Between 2015 and 2022, Nigeria imported 937,460,000 metric tons of sunflower into the country because people are now enlightened and we have not been able to meet the local demand”
Alh. Bukar who used the opportunity to encourage key stakeholders to invest in sunflower also said we want to use this medium to call on investors, the government and private sectors to invest in sunflower value chain because sunflower oil is the third most consumed oil in the world, after palm oil and soya and it is rated the second best after olive because of it health benefits which includes low cholesterol.
“Sunflower has significant uses, it is made up of three components; the oil, cosmetics and food. We partner with various key stakeholders, including, pharmaceuticals and those in food system.”
“It cures and reduces cancer, arthritis, asthma.” Bukar said.
According to research, Sunflower seeds are rich in calories. 100 grams of these seeds give around 585 calories of energy. They have a good amount of fibre (8.5 g) and fats (51.5 g). Fats present are mostly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated; which are good fats. They are also rich in protein (20.77 g).
They are loaded with vitamins like Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate, Choline, vitamin B6, vitamin C and vitamin E.
Contain minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc etc.
Sunflower seeds when consumed, also provide us with plant compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids that are strong antioxidants.
Sunflower seeds nutrition is a well-rounded package, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, making them a nutritious and versatile snack.
